Hyatt Regency Kathmandu Lays Off All Staff After Gen Z Protest

Hyatt Regency Kathmandu has laid off all its employees following severe damages caused by the recent Gen Z protest, making immediate operations impossible.

Hyatt Regency Kathmandu, a five-star hotel, has decided to lay off all its employees due to substantial losses incurred during the Gen Z protest on Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082 B.S. The hotel reported that fire and vandalism during the protests caused significant financial damage, preventing immediate reopening.

According to a letter sent by General Manager Ashish Kumar to the Human Resources department, despite repeated discussions with the trade union regarding workforce management, no resolution was reached. Therefore, in accordance with Section 145 of the Labor Act 2074, the hotel had to implement a complete staff reduction. This decision will take effect from Mangsir 22, 2082 B.S.

At the time of the protests, the hotel employed 133 staff members. During the unrest, a tourist tragically jumped from the fourth floor and died while receiving treatment.

After gradually recovering from the impact of COVID-19, the hotel now faces a renewed crisis due to the Gen Z protest. Looting of tourists’ belongings and property damage during the unrest have negatively affected the hotel’s international brand image. The hotel further stated that reconstruction will require several crores of rupees.
