Nepal Rastra Bank to Absorb Rs 85 Arba Today as Excess Liquidity Piles Up in Banks

Nepal Rastra Bank is collecting Rs 85 Arba from the banking system today to manage the excess liquidity currently piling up in commercial banks.

Because there is too much extra money sitting idle in the banking system, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has decided to pull out Rs 85 Arba today on Shrawan 20. The central bank is using a deposit collection instrument to manage this excess liquidity.

Details of the Deposit Collection

According to the central bank, the bidding process for this deposit collection will happen today at 3 PM. Interested bank and financial institutions can bid for a minimum of Rs 10 Crore. They can also bid for more, but the amount must be divisible by Rs 5 Crore up to the total requested amount of Rs 85 Arba.

The bidding will be based on interest rates. NRB also mentioned that banks can make multiple bids at different interest rates. Only Class ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ licensed bank and financial institutions are allowed to participating in this bidding process.

This deposit collection instrument has a maturity period of 90 days. The central bank will return the principal amount along with interest to the participating banks on Kartik 19.

Why is Liquidity Rising?

In recent times, the demand for loans has not increased as expected. Because of this, the investable funds, which is also called liquidity, has increased heavily in the banking system. Banks are now forced to keep their extra money with the central bank at just around 3 percent interest rate.
