Cosmetic Grade ‘Rose Water’ Seized and Inedible Items Destroyed During Food Monitoring

The government has intensified market monitoring to ensure food safety and quality, leading to the seizure of cosmetic-grade rose water intended for food use and the destruction of other inedible items.

The government has put food safety, quality, and consumer health protection at high priority, actively intensifying its market monitoring efforts.

According to the Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene, under the direction of Minister Nisha Mehta, the Food Technology and Quality Control Department deployed three separate teams with mobile laboratories across Kathmandu Valley on Asar 14. These teams conducted extensive monitoring and inspections.

Cosmetic Grade Rose Water Found

One team, focusing on hotels and restaurants, found ‘cosmetic grade’ ‘rose water’ kept for food purposes at a store within the Anand Bhumi Business Center in Baneshwor, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-10. This inedible rose water was immediately destroyed. The related business owner has been directed to appear before the department within five days with necessary documents to provide an explanation.

Separately, a second team collected various vegetable and fruit samples from the Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market. These samples were tested for pesticide residues. The department reported that all 22 types of fresh fruits and vegetables tested were compliant with food standards.

Furthermore, a team also monitored two dairy industries located in Bhaktapur, directing them to make necessary improvements in production process, cleanliness and quality management.

Minister’s Warning on Quality

Minister Nisha Mehta clearly stated that there would be no compromise on the quality of food and consumable items directly related to public health. She emphasized that strict action will be taken according to law against any individual or institution that creates risk to consumer health. She also informed that the Ministry’s monitoring and regulation campaign will continue more effectively for making the market safe, clean, and quality.

The Food Technology and Quality Control Department has announced that it has publicly released a detailed report outlining all monitoring activities.
