The Supreme Court of Nepal has scheduled a hearing on a contempt of court case filed against the Prime Minister and Finance Minister. Both sides have been asked to attend the discussion on Asar 8.
The case was heard by Justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Nityananda Pandey, who have also asked the opposing side to submit a written explanation.
Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi had filed the petition, claiming that a court order was violated in the national budget announced on Jestha 15, 2078. In that budget, clause 199 had allowed the export of mineral resources. However, in 2079, the Constitutional Bench had issued a mandamus order stopping that provision.
Tripathi argues that the current budget for the fiscal year 2082/83, specifically clause 8, includes the same kind of provision again. Because of this, he claims the government has disobeyed the court’s earlier ruling, and thus filed a contempt case.
