Nepal’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, and National Assembly Chair, Narayan Dahal, have jointly called on all parties to remain committed to constitutional processes during the current crisis.
In a statement issued on Friday, they emphasized that the President is working to find solutions through the constitutional framework, and they stressed that the country must not move away from the rule of law and constitutional values.
They expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property during the GenZ protests on September 8 and 9. They offered condolences to the families of those who died and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. They also urged that no one should be deprived of necessary medical treatment.
The statement drew serious attention to the damage caused during the protests, including vandalism and arson at the Parliament building, government offices inside Singha Durbar, and other public property and historic documents. According to them, these incidents have harmed democratic values, institutions, and property across the country.
The two leaders urged everyone to address demands peacefully and within the boundaries of the constitution, while giving the highest importance to sovereignty, civil liberty, national unity, territorial integrity, and independence. They said that even in times of crisis, these values must be upheld.
They concluded by appealing to all sides to work together for a stronger and more prosperous democracy by respecting the rule of law and staying within the constitutional framework.
