The government has started a new initiative to connect universities with the information technology industry to create job opportunities and stop brain drain from Nepal.
The Ministry of Education and Sports, in partnership with Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, recently organized interaction program with tech entrepreneurs and experts. The national roundtable discussion was coordinated alongside Information Technology Society (ITS) Nepal and Nepal Chamber’s ICT Committee to speed up country’s digital economy through tech transfer and talent development.
Focus on Digital Skills and Job Creation
During the event, Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel said that government is giving high priority to the use of information technology in schools and universities. He shared that the ministry is bringing policies to connect digitalization, inclusion, and skill development with our education system. Science and Technology Minister Mahabir Pun also mentioned that IT sector has a huge potential in Nepal. He added that with small investment, people can earn high income in this field, which will help country’s economy and create jobs for youths.
Shailendra Jha, the advisor to Ministry of Education, explained that these steps will be taken phase by phase. The ministry wants to encourage students to complete their higher studies in Nepal and reduce brain drain of skilled human resources. To make this happen, the ministry has instructed newly appointed Vice Chancellors to organize annual job and career fairs in all central universities and affiliated colleges starting from this academic session.
Jobs Before Graduation and Updated Syllabus
To support students, the government is coordinating with private IT companies to offer conditional jobs to eligible students even before they complete their final exams. This will give students a clear career roadmap. To bridge the gap between classroom teaching and industry needs, the university syllabus will be updated to make it more practical. Universities will also start guest lectures by IT experts and joint evaluation of final year projects with the industry.
Earn While You Learn and Central Portal
Furthermore, the ministry is working to introduce credit-based internships. Under this “Earn While You Learn” concept, students will get a basic salary during their internships, which will also count as academic credits. To make this entire process easy and transparent, a central digital portal will be launched soon, where students can easily find verified internship and job opportunities in one place.
