Communication Minister and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Discuss Improving Bancharedanda Waste Management

Communication Minister Dr. Bikram Timilsina and Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol have held a discussion to solve waste management issues at the Bancharedanda landfill site.

Communication Minister Dr. Bikram Timilsina and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol held a meeting recently. The meeting was focused on solving the ongoing issues at Bancharedanda landfill site and making waste management better.

Key Topics Discussed in the Meeting

During the discussion at Ministry of Communication, both sides talked about upgrading and blacktopping road that leads to landfill site. They also talked about addressing the complaints of local people, capping the waste after dumping, and coordinating between three levels of government.

Minister Timilsina said that federal government and the metropolitan city must separate necessary budget to start road improvement works. He also added that local complaints regarding bad smell, transporting waste without covering the vehicles, and not doing capping on time must be solved quickly.

Financial Burden and Waste Division

Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol shared that waste from 20 different municipalities in Kathmandu Valley goes to Bancharedanda. However, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has been bearing almost all financial burden for its management. She said if other municipalities also contribute financially, it will be much easier to solve the problems of local residents.

According to the metropolitan city, about 60 percent of the waste going to Bancharedanda is biodegradable and remaining 40 percent is non-biodegradable. Daily, more than two hundred trucks filled with waste reach the landfill site.

To manage the landfill site for long term, the discussion also focused on separating waste at its source, improving the waste collection and transport system, and increasing cooperation between the federal, provincial, and local governments.
