Entrepreneurs Demand Government to Lower Public Transport Fares After Fuel Price Cut

The Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs has urged the government to adjust public transport fares following the recent decrease in fuel prices.

Fares Adjustment Demanded After Price Drop

Following a big drop in petroleum prices from last night, Nepal Federation of National Transport Entrepreneurs has demanded government to adjust public transport fares according to the automatic pricing system.

Nepal Oil Corporation had decreased price of petrol by Rs 20 per liter, and diesel and kerosene by Rs 30 per liter. This new rate has come into effect from Wednesday morning.

Need for Scientific Fare Adjustment

The President of Federation, Punya Prasad Sitaula, made a formal request to government to adjusting the fares based on automatic system. He mentioned that transport fares should be adjusted in transparent, scientific, and objective way whenever there is change in fuel prices.

He also pointed out that fares are quickly increased when fuel prices rise, but when prices go down, fares are not reduced on time. According to him, this delay creates a lot of confusion for both passengers and transport operators.

Other Factors for Determining Fares

President Sitaula further explained that fuel price is not only thing to look at when deciding transport fares. He said the government should also evaluate other costs on scientific basis. These costs includes vehicle maintenance, insurance, salary of workers, price of spare parts, banking costs, and overall economic indicators.
